ICDM Newsletter February 2015
During the month of February IDCM focused more on developing our Monday to Friday programs. Although we met with a number of other organisations to discuss possible partnerships we are proud to say that our own programs of training with the youth were a great success. We are now also posting updates every now and then on our Facebook page. This will help those who are interested in joining us to easily and more regularly find information about our recent activities.
With the recent constantly changing weather different ideas arose about what kinds of kids’ water games could be introduced to the programs, under the supervision of the trainers. (We ensure that the kids are always under trainers’ supervision and that they do not use the Umgeni River until the water quality is declared safe by the Health Unit of the EThekwini municipality.)
It is always amazing to see what really keeps the youth entertained whilst new learning skills and knowledge at the same time. Vuleka Centre’s representatives visited the ICDM to discuss whether there could be a possible partnership. Vuleka is a non-profit organisation that offers training to post-matric graduates. They offer a programme dealing with the different topics affecting our society, greatly helping the youth to find their value in our communities. After meeting with us they have offered the ICDM an opportunity to have their programs running within the ICDM premises (beginning in two weeks’ time). This opportunity will help us realize our number one goal of having well trained youth to run ICDM programs in the future.
We do acknowledge the fact that most kids are not familiar with reading and we try by all means in our programs to have regular reading hours. Through this we have seen an increase in the youth becoming interested in reading and writing texts.
We are looking forward to the month of March as we have proposed a primary school event to be held in Isithumba in mid-March, 2015. With the invaluable help from the schools’ sports teachers this day should be a great success. This event will also help ICDM to keep the important contact with the schools with whom we are in partnership. We are still in the process of seeking funding to strengthen this worthwhile link for the benefit of the youth.
We are the Future!!
